On this day, 80 years ago, December 7th, 1941
History only remains in the main stream memory based on what individuals that were alive to experience the event remember, and naturally what schools teach, and museums and reinactments historical events portray. Beyond these, history fades away over time, sooner or later becoming a mere footnote in history. Time fades away most history, especially when those that survived or witnessed the events have long time passed away. Prominent events are generally the best remembered. The Revolutionary war... America's fight for Independence. The American civil war is vividly remembered because it cut so deep into the people of the United States...with highly controversial issues. Memories of World War I are starting to fad from memory... after all, everyone from then have long passed away. World War II is still very much alive in our memories, at least for us over folks, although most that fought in that war are now passed. World War II is remembered mostly because our father's and grandfathers fought in that war...many not returning. For the younger generations, the war in Korea and Vietnam is not even a memory. And if you talk to anyone under 30, they know little or nothing about the middle east or Afghanistan war except for current news reports. Sadly, when talking to my teenage grand kids, they know almost nothing about Pearl Harbor or WW II.
Today... We remember the beginning of World War II and the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor... December 7th, 1941. 80 years ago. There may only be a mere hand full still alive that survived the Pearl Harbor attack.
Some memories should never fade away...
