Perspective... Growing up, my grandfather would be amazed at prices in the 1970s and 80s, and complain about the costs of, well, just about everything. Being born in 1904, things were certainly much less costly as he grew up. So for him, 39 cents for a leaf of bread outrageous. For me today, I see that same loaf of bread at $3.49... And to me it's outrageous. So, the older you get, the cost of everything will seem outrageous. It's all about perspective.
