Going back to life in the 1950s
Yes, the middle of the last century.
No cell phones, no smart phones,
no computers, no internet.
To make a phone call away from home.
First you had to find a telephone both.
( not too hard, they were everywhere)
Then you had to carry dimes.
( it cost 10¢ to make a call, coins only)
And you had to hope someone was home to get your call.
( and they weren't outside and couldn't hear these phone ring)
If someone wanted to call you...
They had to wait until you got home
so you could answer the phone in person.
(no answering machines then either)

Then find a mail box
( they were everywhere back then)
Put the letter into the mail box.
Wait several days for it to get to the other person.
The wait for them to go through the same process to reply.
So, within 7-10 days you have completed correspondence.
Maybe that's why everybody meet at the local drive-in.
