What is it?... Why is it here?

 

I think it's a telephone that my great grandfather used.

It required coins to use it... to talk to anyone.

He said they were once everywhere...

Because they didn't have smart phones.

They had to call a operator to make long distant calls.

And something about... Person to person calls. 

He said they used phones to call to hear what time it was. 
And get the weather forecast.

I can't imagine that... phones could used only to talk to someone.

Phones couldn't take photos either.
They had to use a camera to take pictures...

 Then send something away, and wait to get paper photos. 
They couldn't text... They had to send letters through the mail.

Letters like in colonial days? 
Yeah... pen and paper, and the post office or something. 
And they had to use paper maps to go places.

No music either... a tran-sister radio or something.

How did they live like that? 
I don't know... Completely medieval! 
Yeah... That's why they called it the dark ages. 
What's that Black thing hanging down? 
I think it was a number book...

You had to look up people by name to get their phone number. 
OMG... The phone didn't store phone numbers? 
Nope... You had to remember them or look them up. 
In that thick book!

I couldn't live like that. 
Yeah... They didn't have anything way back then. 
And they always had to carry around dimes to ... make calls.

No social media either.... Nothing! 
That's insane.

Wow... Take a picture of it... No one will believe this.

Yep... Life in the dark ages.
