[FLASHBACK]
Every once in a while I think back to where I grew up… Baltimore. I actually was grew outside the city but there was always frequent visits to places in Baltimore. The Inner Harbor was always a favorite place of mine as an adult.
Filled with lots of things to do and see, shopping, and of particular interest to me… great food! Boy, do I really miss the food. Hot Steamed Crabs, Hot Steamed Shrimp, Good Crab Cakes (not the usual stuff they sluff off to the tourists), and Cream of Crab soup with jumbo lump crab meat. But that’s another story to itself. Remembering the old land marks that we grew up with… The Old Power Plant, The Bromo Tower, The USFG building, and the most famous and highly recognizable sign from the “Domino” plant. Than there’s the inner harbor with the mixture of the old and the new… the Aquarium, the science center, and the historic “Constellation”… a early 1800’s frigate of the US Navy. Yep … lots of good memories. But it always seems a bit funny how most of them center around food. The old Greek restaurant in Highland Town, G&A, famous for their hot dogs, Jacks Corned Beef Sandwiches, Polock Johnnies famous polish sausages, and all the assorted Crab Houses that seemed to be every where, the Old Circle Bar-B-Que (Dundalk),
Pizza John’s (Essex) famous for the best Pizza around, and not to forget all the snowball stands that made those summer nights a real joy. All these places and much more that you would drive miles for just to enjoy their great food. Some are gone, some are still there, some have changed, and some are as good as they ever were…. but all are missed. Even the old McDonalds that when it opened sometime around 1960 had the best ever french fries. It was an original Golden Arches Building,
front service windows, no seats, kinda like a drive in but ya had to serve yourself, so most of the meals were ate in the car. You could watch the fresh potatoes come out of the hopper peeler, drop into the wash sink, sliced in the huge lever hand slicers, go into the fry bins in stacks ready to fry, than go into the fryers and served fresh and hot… they were the best ever… and so were the milk shakes made from hand dipped ice cream. There will always new places that create new memories, but the old that remain the absolute favorites are the ones you grew up with.
