Holiday Spirit & the “White Stuff”

Cinderella’s Castle Frosted for Christmasxmas (1) It’s that time of year again and if Christmas isn’t on your mind, than it’s in your face where ever you go. Thanksgiving is barely over… there’s still turkey leftovers in the fridge… and Christmas is starting to get into full swing. So you might as well enjoy it. Me and my Sweetie go into the parks to do just that. The best way to get into the Holiday Spirit is a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida. First go to Magic Kingdom to see all the Christmas decorations, see the shows, and go to The Christmas Party.

Copy (2) of C (4)

Than take at trip over to Epcot and see Christmas around the World Showcase.

Copy of C (4)

Than to really top it all off… go to Hollywood Studios to see the Osborne Lights… go to the “Streets of America”…  join the crowd…  feel the chill in the air…  wait for the lighting ceremony… hear the Christmas music…see the lights come to live and dance to the music… and enjoy the early night snowfall.

Yes… snow flurries complete the entire setting.

Copy (3) of C (4)

If this doesn’t put you into the Holiday Spirit, well, you might as well get that there Grumpy shirt and wear it proudly just as a warning to the rest of us. Me, I prefer the fun loving, carefree, Goofy shirt… it’s also a bit of a warming too. Getting the Holidays off to a Great start!

and the best part is…

I get to do it all with Shelly!

Christmas Spirit

20101128 (17)

Another Great Day in the parks… this time Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We went in especially to see the Osborne Christmas Lights on the Streets of America. The show will definitely put you into the Christmas Spirit… but than again 2 million lights flashing to the music while it’s snowing… well… you get the picture. What a great evening with my Sweetie… walk around, hold hands, take pictures, enjoy all the Christmas Decorations… and just have a enjoyable relaxing time. Little something to snack on, a short stop here and there, and a little more walking about.

We decided to leave the park before closing to beat the crowds and the rush. Must have miscalculated a bit… we were right in the middle of the rush leaving the park… guess lots decided to leave after seeing the Osborne Lights. This time we took a Disney Bus into the park from the Caribbean Beach Resort. So we were off to the bus stop to ride back to the truck. Disney Bus rides are pretty normal… sometimes a bit crowded… sometimes you’re almost alone…. and mostly uneventful.  Coming back from Hollywood Studios the bus was packed… really packed. First we waited for the bus for about 15 minutes ( must have just missed one )…  a large crowd gathered awaiting it’s arrival… as the crowd gets larger… the bus arrived. The driver took another 5 minutes trying to get everyone into the bus. “Everyone please more back, keep moving back, fill all the spaces… please keep moving back”. Eventually everyone got on the bus and we were finally underway… packed like sardines. The driver announced that the music system was broken and jokingly said everyone could sing if they wanted. Now I'm sure this was just an idol suggestion… but the riders seemed to pick up on the invite. Those at the front of the bus began to sing “Jingle Bells”… those at the back… a large family reunion group began to sing the “Wheels on the Bus” song. So as it went on they got to the third verse and began to sing “The Driver on the bus says move on back… move on back… move on back… the driver on the bus says move on back”. Well this resulted in mostly everyone on the bus laughing and having a good time… turning around the somewhat negativeness of being packed into the bus. So ya just never know… turned out to be one of the best times we ever had on a Disney Bus. A good note to end the evening on. Ya just never know where a little Magic with happen… and of all places… on the bus ride back to the resort.

It’s a Wilderness Christmas

One of the things we enjoy doing is to visit the Fort Wilderness Campground at Disney… especially at Christmas Time! Many of the Rvers and Campers go way over the top for Christmas. They decorate so much that they even out do Disney on the decorations. Rving guests are taking it to the limit and than some. It’s simply amazing to see how much decorations they really do. Pictures can not start to convey how much they decorate! But here’s a sampling to try… remember all these decorations are done by the guest campers that are staying there.

Odd Things ( for the younger generation)

Odd things for the younger generation. As time marches on, more and more things become “Odd” to the younger folks. Hey… sometimes new things seem “odd” to the older folks now… but that’s another entry. Having recently talked with some of the younger generation it’s not odd to see a questioning look on their face when talking about some things from the past. No, I didn’t think I had two heads or was speaking in a foreign language.

Here’s an examples. So if you didn’t already know… a “turntable”…  is something used in the dinning room. “45” refers to a gun. 33 and 78… well, don’t have a clue. And records… well, that’s all has to do with sports and stuff. So what the connection between all of these? Someone 33, and someone 78 are coming to dinner, at a special table that turns, one of them has a gun, and they are going to eat a record amount of something…. or maybe the 33 and 78 are the records that they are going to break. I didn’t want to even get into the “arm” and “needle” thing… I could see where that was going.

Here’s a picture… and yes… it played music. …and yes… if it helps to explain it better… this technology was invented by Ben Franklin… and no I never met him… but thanks for the question. Yep, mechanical things from the past do look strange at times.

4328913523_38f3f76b6f_b

Here’s and updated version, portable, stereo, with radio.

Made by “Airline”… if memory serves… wasn’t Airline sold by Wards.

5091638821_953db6e840_z

Another oddity… the typewriter.

and no… Smith-Corona isn’t a cigar.

It typed directly onto the paper as you typed each word, in fact each letter of each word.

It did not do formatting, correct anything, check spelling, delete anything, move anything, but it did print in 2 colors… black & red… from a cloth ribbon wet with ink, and the striker keys hit the ribbon making a stamp of the letter you wanted on the paper… just kinda like a “type set” printing press… yes, no doubt in some improved version that was developed by… probably Ben Franklin… and no, I never met him. So you had to get it right the first time, no tolerance for mistakes, or you just got to start all over again whit a new piece of paper.

But it was, a marvel of our time.

The printed word… instantly… one letter at time… how odd indeed.

5091639541_307626a9d2_z

Another oddity. The telephone.

Yes… it had a funny dial that you spun around to “dial” the number you wanted. Yep… it was in two pieces, and even stranger, had wires, and connected into an outlet in the wall. On the plus side: it never went dead or lost signal, you always knew when it was ( wired to the wall), the number & letters were big enough to actually see, and believe it or not, had a dial that lit up… and came in designer colors. My mom’s was pink. I don’t think dad had any say in the matter. I think every house that had a woman in it… well… they had this phone.

Funny thing about old sayings and terms… we still say “dial” this number, and dials have been gone for … 40 years? Well for the younger folks… now you know where the term “dial” came from.

The same applies to the term “ring”… when phones actually had physical bells at rang ( yes , kinda like the Liberty bell only much smaller) … and you didn’t hear music or your favorite song when somebody called you.

And that in itself… “called”  derives from the original way to call someone… yelling their name to get their attention.

I guess the words “princess”, “designer colors”, and the “light up dial” were all successful marketing ploys to get the women to buy this phone… and it worked beautifully. The men… they could care less, didn’t want to talking to most people in person, so why would I want to do it on a phone… besides, how could we get to use it anyway… wasn’t it semi-attached to the wife’s head? … all the time!  ( LOL)

4327129066_d855c74762_z

Now for something new… the “Slide rule”

No, it’s not a rule in baseball about sliding into home plate… although I’m sure they no doubt have rules about that.

Nope, the slide rule was for lack of a better term, a mechanical devise that looked kinda like a ruler with a sliding center strip. By lining up the desired numbers on the strip you could do multiplication and division. Yep, kinda like the Chinese 3000 years ago but without the beads. And no, you couldn’t add or subtract on it, that was still don’t with pencil and paper, or a mechanical adding machine… again based on the Chinese bead thing again.

4322969284_3a9cba21f0_z

Yep… lots of “odd” things to the young.

Times change fast.  Some of the old mechanical technology…

well… just the idea of how simply it worked… genius!

Just look at what the Egyptian did with what they had to work with!

Okay… I know… the whole alien intervention thing…

you got a point… but that’s another entry too!

Por favor mantengase alejado de las puertas

One of my favorite topics is always the Disney Monorails.

I’ve always been intrigued with them since I first saw them in 1972.

Thought they were the coolest thing… and still do.

There are 12 Monorails…

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Black, Gold,

Silver, Coral, Lime, Teal, Blue, & Maroon.

The Pink & Purple Monorails Cabs were retired (after accident) and combined to make the Teal

The Maroon Monorails was created with two new cabs and six rebuilt cars…

coming into service soon.

and as the doors are already closing they say the Spanish version….

oops, just a bit late if you are too close to the doors.

Where it all started…

A look back in time… from word of mouth and town meetings,

to newspapers, and than to radio…

radio, a new medium that instantly reported news,

and delivered live entertainment right to your living room.

When Television was getting started.

It was the embodiment of then modern technology.

Speech, sound, and pictures… instantly… right in your home.

A marvel of it’s time… strange and odd to look at now.

First only in black & white, and later a giant leap into color.

So here’s a look back into history.

I remember this… it’s what was broadcast for several minutes

before the daily broadcast actually began.

( Tv only broadcast morning to late evening )

4326395585_2ba03a210f_z

The luxury version…

Tv, radio, and record player… all in one unit.

Than Color was introduced…

yep… an amazing devise.

4327128258_899a57be0e_z

and a treat for the whole family.

4355598624_5f27e2e1cc_z

Families gathered around the Television for the evenings entertainment.

Just like they had gathered about the family radio for years before.

A new age had begun that would change things forever.

and just look where we are at today!

At one time we were delighted to just see moving pictures in color

and happy to get 3-4 channels, even if 2 were snowy.

yes… just look where we are today.

Coffee … Plain & Simple.

A simple product, a simple time, a simple solution…

get your coffee just the way you like it…

quick and easy and only 5¢ a cup.

4328915037_7ddfbb99bd_z

only all with one of four easy choices…

funny how 5¢ seemed to be the going price

for just about everything …way back when.

Coffee, soda, candy bars… yep… lots of things…

I still remember those 5¢ kosher pickles in the barrel.

(and those big white pickled onions)

Yep… 5¢ bought a lot back than.

Times have changed, choices are complex,

But, without question Starbucks makes some great coffees…

and to quote a movie line…

If you want to have a rather self satisfying defining image of one’s self…

Just go into any Starbucks,

and with all certainty and with an authoritative tone and confidence in your voice,

order without hesitation your favorite coffee indulgence.

Mine is a White Chocolate Mocha Vienete’ …

and it’s even easy to say…

( whole milk and a double shot of espresso)

Pretty much plain and simple…

but certainly the Best!

I treat myself every once in a while at $4.00 a cup.

Quest for the perfect Rv

Since the original horse drawn Gypsy Wagons and the later American versions know as the covered wagons, there has always been the quest to have all the comforts of home right with you as you traveled.

First there was basic travel and early attempts…

R toR (3)

later attempts seemed more promising…

R toR (7)

Things were looking up in the 40’s & 50’s

R toR (10)

The 60’s saw the Hippie Generation take to the roads

R toR (12)

Monster Rv’s took Rv’s to new levels

Like a high/low trailer… the upper floor raises

to make a second floor complete with roof deck.

zz20100703 (18)

The inside is full luxury…

staircase to the second floor….

that’s the bathroom on the mid-level.

zz20100703 (29)

upper floor has panoramic windows all around.

zz20100703 (15)

This rig was set up for on site movie productions

and the upstairs was the work area…

personal Rv’s would have a more lavish upstairs.

This one only cost 7.5 million…

the Rv we own is a bit less costly.

But, as you can see the sky’s the limit!

at least for the rich and famous.

It’s only a place to sleep… right?

Whether you are on vacation, visiting, or just want to be somewhere different of a while… where ever you stay is just a place to sleep… right? Some a little bigger, some a little better, some with a better view, some with more gadgets & convinces, some a bit more upscale… but still just a place to sleep… right? This may be true for the places the average person can afford, but if you have the extra money to spend, or can get those limited time special offers or discounts, or perhaps even be lucky to get an room upgrade free of change… this would certainly be something to wish for.

How about the “Princess Suite”

oops… that’s the bathroom…

cindy suite

now…here’s the bedroom…

cindy suite (1)

yes, go ahead and say it…

Oh my god….

cindy suite (2)

Yep… something befitting a Princess.

Guess this isn’t just another place just to sleep.

So where can you get such a room… perhaps a castle or palace? Maybe… but this particular room is at Disneyland in California. The price wasn’t part of the information… kinda like a menu without prices… if you have to ask… you can’t afford it. I’m kinda like at the other end of the spectrum… I get my food prices from an overhead lighted pricing board… usually the value menu… I get my rooms pretty much the same way. Go figure.

Food for thought…

Now there’s a bit of a throwback to yesteryear…

some of my favorites…perhaps yall can remember this…

Rice crispy treats, wow, they’ve been around that long!

Back than 5¢… now at Disney for $3.95

food (3)

Kool-Aid… an American Tradition

food (1)

Amazing what 5¢ would once buy…

5 pieces of candy.

food

Than there was Keen Drink Mix.

Now gone, and mostly forgotten.

food (2)

and of course everyone’s favorite that’s still going strong today…

Coca-Cola… available at the local soda fountain for 5¢

Always one of my favorites!

soda

or if you felt a bit more adult or sophisticated…

Pepsi Cola for the more mature taste.

Men’s clothes haven’t changed much…

but thank goodness that women’s have.

soda (1)

and the ever popular…

Canada Dry Ginger Ale…

Annie’s a straight shooter…

and she loves it!

soda (2)

Yep… advertising at it’s best…

clear cut, straight forward…

simple and unassuming…

at a time when life was simpler too!

So there’s another short trip down memory lane.

Hope you enjoyed the trip.
