The good news for kids...
Grown up usually didn't return the bottles, so they left them next to the sidewalk, or outside the store.
As kids, we would go around, collect the empty bottles and return them to the store for the deposit money.
Collect 3 bottles and
you got a free coke.
Return 2 more and you got
4 pieces of penny candy.
Return 3 bottles for 6 for 6¢
and you got a 5¢ candy bar,
My favorite was Milky Way
Plus a piece of penny candy.
