The South... as in the cultural perception of which states compose the South. Historical remnants of the Civil War... it's what somewhat defines the southern culture and the states that are considered to be in the south. Southern hospitality and their way of life further refines the defining lines of the "Southern States". The accompanying article provides some additional understanding of this issue. The border states.... Texas, Oklahoma, and Maryland are considered by some to be in the south. Most, like myself, do not consider them as being culturally in the south. Maryland was part if the North during the war, and being north of Washington, its considered in the north. Texas & Oklahoma... well, they belong for the most part in the west. Some would say that Florida is part of the southern culture, and some would not. Perhaps it not considered part of the cultural south because it has so many cultural influences that greatly dilute the southern culture to the point of non-existence. Missouri as indicated in the polling is kinda like a redheaded stepchild... not part of the south, not part if the west... and nobody outside of Missouri cares.
So there you have it... Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee are kinda ify. Those that consider Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona to be in the cultural south...well... snap... they are in the west! Idoeno! Interesting reading... now you know.
