Facts.... truths.... beliefs... feelings... and prejudice.
So where's the problems that face society today. It's the same as those that have faced mankind since early beginnings.
FACTS speak for themselves. It's a unshakable fact. It is unchanging and absolute.
TRUTHS are basically the mostly logical impression of the facts... which leads inevitably leads to possible misinterpretations.
BELIEFS is where facts and truths can become mutated and perverted into something far from facts and truth. It's a concept where despite facts or truth, a separate reality exists and is without any basis other than that of the mind. It is thought to be true in the minds of the teachers and students, without any basis in fact or scientific proof, nevertheless the thought process, their reality, remains absolute and treated as fact.
THE PROBLEM begins when any beliefs clash with conflicting beliefs. No matter how it is justified, most if not all conflicting beliefs can not live with the idea of others not believing as they do. Inevitably this clash of beliefs leads to conflict and prejudices.
CONFLICT & PREJUDICE has become the cornerstone of every religion in the world. While some keep their beliefs passive and to themselves to guide their lives, many take their beliefs to justify domination and oppression of others. Prejudice and conflict that promotes violence and social division.
FEELINGS based on beliefs, coupled with prejudice and violence, constitutes most of the worlds problems. Spanning families, neighbors, communities, countries, and the entire world, people simply can not live and let live. As a human race we have failed... resulting in death and wars.
WHY? Beliefs and feelings, not based on any resemblance of truth or facts, constitute just about every problem in society. Throw in greed, envy, the need to convert and control others... well, the world, right down to neighborhoods will never be at peace. Again humanity, if it is an experiment, it has mostly failed.
WHAT IS BELIEFS? Call it what you will, but the majority of beliefs today center around religions. Religions that range from century's old established primary religions to those religions less organized, less widespread, that fall outside the normal realm of accepted religions. Beliefs and the resulting feelings that incite prejudice and social unrest, either directly or indirectly, are indeed the source of many evils. Religions, based on beliefs & feelings, furthered by prejudice, have perpetrated many of the atrocities and suffering around the world over mankinds recorded history.
Are religions a necessary evil? Is the good they do out weigh the evils they create. That's something you must decide for yourself. I guess it all goes back to the old adage ... "There is good and bad in everything". Religion gives a belief and feeling of comfort to many.... and a platform to create prejudice to those that are different as well as leading to social unrest and violence... and even wars.
