Rages on... 2 years into the conflict.
It's surprising how little facts are known about the Civil War.
It's surprising how little facts are known about the Civil War.
It's amazing ... all the misconceptions.
All the miss represented facts.
All that people believe what isn't factual.
And they get upset about based on mis-information.
First off... something simple.
Do you know what this flag is?
Did you say the flag of the Confederacy?
You are in the 99% that think it is.
Guess what... You are wrong.
This is the Official Flag of the Confederacy.
Guess what... You are wrong.
This is the Official Flag of the Confederacy.
Most have never seen it before.
Facts...
As to the north and its soldiers... Again the vast majority were fighting to preserve the union... Not to fight and die over the slaves.
The north fighting in the war didn't adopt the concept of fighting to abolish slavery until after two years into the war... When the war was going badly and the north need the extra support it needed to turn the tide of the war... abolishing slavery became the rally issue. Encouraging slaves to rebell against the South, and northern blacks to enlist in the war. Yes, abolishing slavery we'd the right thing to do... But that was not what the soldiers of the North or the South were fighting and dying for.
So today, while there are those that want to desecrate Graves and monuments of those that fought in a war 160 years ago... Several generations ago... They don't even know the facts of what they are offended by. They are offended by everything connected to the south. Names of buildings, streets, parks, and schools. They are offended by the southern soldiers, their graves and monuments, even though they were not personally fighting to preserve slavery.
Even though General Lee was a prominent Northern Soldier before the war, he could not fight against the south and his homeland of Virginia in the war. Upon the start of the war, he set free any slaves the he inherited from family, before going to war.
So... There you have it. What most people don't know. The wrong facts that people get upset and are offended by... perpetrated by television movies and handed down the generations via word of mouth.
Yes, the powers to be in the South started the war over slavery.
But the soldiers that fought and died were NOT fighting to preserve or abolished slavery. Their convictions to fight, the honor they deserve, should not be diminished by misconceptions. Nor should people be offended by events of 160 years ago... it does nothing to be detrimental to their life today. It seems to be merely something to blame for their lives and social issues today. Going out of their way to desecrate Graves and monuments, and boycott civil war reenactments will never change their situation and lives today.
Just something to think about.
Facts...
It is true that the powers to be in the south, the politicians, the plantation owners, land owners, and the rich and famous, wanted to continue slavery to protect their means of keeping power and money... thus they proposed succession... which was entirely based on the slavery issue. They used propaganda to ensure the support of southern people to fight their war... saying that the northern government wanted to change and control everyone's life in the south... telling them how to live. The vast majority of those in the southern armies were not fighting to preserve slavery... this is evident from the records and letters of the southern soldlers. They had nothing to gain over the slavery issue... and were not going to risk their lives to fight over slavery. They thought they were fighting to keep the northern government from controlling how they lived.
