Seniors falling and getting hurt. You hear about it everyday. I use to think how could this happen so much? Carelessness? Health issues? Maybe just simply doings stupid things without thinking. I mostly thought that seniors were in control, and falls could be easily avoided. Well, perhaps some things are in their control... and some things are not.
Physical therapist say the anytime you loose your balance, even a little, and have to touch something to maintain your balance, its considered a fall. Touching a wall, a chair, anything to regain your balance... It's a fall. Of course, falling completely to the floor has its physical hazards. Head injuries, broken bones, broken hips, not to mention wounded pride.
Physical issues as you age presents new challenges.

One person might have isdyes with their feet, nerve damage. It's unbelievable how much your toes maintain yiu balance. Loss of muscle tone increases the risk. Vision issues increases the balance issue. It's amazing how much the scenes of feeling and sight control balance. Thus the balance issue risk, and the risk of falling increases. Plus you mind always sees yourself as if you were younger, and more capable... which leads to over confidence. And other issues including a minor stroke... well, its a recipe for probable falling and injury.
So a seniors life is now concentrating on every single step. And watch turning to one side or another, another motion to loose your balance. Especially on steps, or in the bathroom.
If they are smart they will surcome to the need to not only concentrate on every step, by also have a heightened awareness of their diminished physical ability... and foresee possible risks, and avoid them.
