Balance

Balance... The ability to stand, walk, and run.

When you are young your body helps you learn to stand, walk, and run... Eventually without falling down. Once learned,  its a achievement to last you the rest of your life.

Often taken for granted until you have an issue. It's amazing everything that contributes to balance. Your eyes, constantly sending images you brain working like a gyroscope to keep everything in balance.  Then your inner ears,  again working like a gyroscope to keep everything in balance. Even your toes which act as sensors telling the brain the status of your balance. Then there's muscle memory to auto correct, constantly making adjustments to maintain balance. Even the motion of your arms contributes to maintaining balance.

So... You get old. Some things may not work as efficiently, and other abilities compensate to maintain balance. Then issues start to compound. Joints and muscles become impaired. Feet & toes develop nerve damage affecting sensory perception. Eye sight is not what it used to be,  low light situations reduce sensory input. And the inner ear can be affected by infections leaving permanent damage. The crystals of the inner ear get out of place and balance is greatly affected and extreme dizziness results in varying degrees and occurances. Queasy head and queasy stomach set the stage for balance issues and risk of falling. A condition called BPPV. Even walking with a cane still has a degree of a fall risk.

Conclusion... Getting old has issues not for the weak.
Hopefully you will not have any of these issues.
At least no more than one at a time.

Myself... Learning to deal with:
Nerve damage in feet & toes.
Loss of muscles in legs.
Joint issues in knees & hip.
Slight cataract affecting vision.
(all delt with ongoing)
And the worst BPPV which totally  destroys balance,
( which affects are varied and hopefully temporary)

So... be careful what you take for granted.

BPPV... Benign paroxysmal postitional vertigo.
THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT FUN.

So here I sit... Mostly doing nothing.
