Home town

Home town charm

Visiting our daughter in Virginia in the small town of Culpeper. Steeped in history from the 1700s, most notably of civil war activity, with many interesting 200 year old homes. To walk the same streets that General Grant walked and see the childhood homes of southern generals. All right in the heartland of civil war activity. A nice small town next to the farmlands of the Piedmont Valley adjacent to Shenandoah National Park and Shenandoah Valley. Everyone seems a bit nicer, a bit kinder, and easy to smile. It's a real pleasure compared to larger towns or cities. Somewhat limited on business / restaurant options... but there's a Walmart, Lowes, and there's always Amazon for everything else. Nice quiet peaceful small town. It's really nice to live / drive through the farmlands seeing the mountains and its a short drive to Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive which is one of my favorite places to be.

On another note:  many people are interested in history and the American Civil War. The attraction is about history, and while it is human nature to judge history on its merits,  especially the civil war and slavery issue... we are are not validating its merits as it relates to life today. History is just that... history... removed 165 years ago. The slavery issues from 165 years ago has absolutely nothing to do with today's problems. Blaming history on your lot in life today... well, any shortcomings are on you and today's issues... not history.
To put it bluntly... if you seek to blame the merits of the civil war from 165 years ago for your problems today and get offended by anything related to the civil war era ... you need to let it go.

Today's world is full of prejudice and unjust situations, kept alive by today's people... perpetrating and kept alive by today's ethinic groups and social media... not history removed by 8 generations.
