Driving home at dusk. Looking over the countryside here in central Virginia... I'm compelled by certain thoughts. Repeatedly the thoughts and feelings of what civil war soldiers must have thought on the evenings before great battles. Seeing exactly the same sky that they would have seen over 150 years ago. The sun sets today, over the battlefield to come tomorrow, the full moon rises and illuminates the night sky and the countryside below. The calm and peaceful feeling of the evening makes everything feel alright... but the knowledge of the coming battle tomorrow gives you the sense that this beautiful evening should be cherished, for tomorrow brings death and destruction. Odd how you can sense what others felt so long ago, as if by some supernatural connection or occurrence. Nevertheless... The evening sky was so beautiful, as was the relaxing feeling as dusk turned into night. The bright full moon illuminating the fields. Seen tonight, as it was for hundreds of years before.
