Smart.... Too Smart... Getting Smarter... Smarter than us...
HISTORY: I remember when we thought we were the ultimate cutting edge of technology ... portable transistor radios, color tv, simple tv remote, and later, the microwave oven. Not too long before these, some things were considered modern marvels... running water in the house, electric lights, electric appliances, and automatic clothes washer.
TODAY: What a world our grand kids are growing up in. Computers, smart phones, smart electronics... Virtually everything that could be controlled by your voice, programmed to control itself, or controlled by computers & smart devices. Everything in your house, everything at work, everything in transportation, even your cars are now smart with automation and able to "think" and react / function on their own.
Everything in our lives is automated, not only to follow preprogramming, but to think, analyze, and react on its own, in accordance with our programmed responses. So when do we cross the line from advanced programming that follows a prescribed path, seemingly thinking on its own, to true artificial intelligence that will make decisions, and react in ways contrary to what we would have as a desired response.
Everything is getting more and more connected. There has even been cases when two "thinking" (artificial intelligences), not only to communicated, but analyzed and developed ideas and concepts beyond the programmers thoughts. They even developed their own advanced language to communicate, so we didn't know what they were communicating, what they were developing, and perhaps what they were planning. Even given an ultimate "prime directive" to benefit humans, it would not be too far a jump to having them control things that would overall benefit mankind, not in accordance with what would normally be our objectives. Why? Because its easy to see that mankind has not done too good of a job managing itself. Free will to achieve great things has been greatly beneficial to mankind. Free will to make violence and war is not logical. Once artificial intelligence gains total control, its only logical that they would either limit or control "human free will", to protect mankind from itself. Now there's something to think about... as more and more things are taken over by automation. How far can we allow artificial intelligence to control things within our wishes and programming, until it crosses a line, were it actually takes total control, for the overall benefit of mankind?
BUT I digress... for now, enjoy the "smart" revolution, where everything is controlled at your fingertips. It's amazing... And in many ways, a true blessing.
