Southern Sunset

Southern Most Sunset… Yep… gotta go to Key West. But you may be a little surprised exactly where the southern most point is. Traditionally everyone goes down Whitehead St to where it meets South St you’ll find that famous landmark… “The Southern Most Point in Continental United States”. It’s the arrow all the way to the right on the map.

Key West…

But if you look a bit closer at the map…

the middle arrow actually marks the most southern point.

It’s on the Truman Annex…

right about here…

where the antenna array is located.

(this photo taken from the first arrow on map looking east)

“Continental”… it’s kinda a play on works…

verses the true southern most point.

Standing at the tip of the point ( first arrow )…

looking west… the sun sets right about here…

A nice little beach on the south side…

stone breakers on the west side…

The beach also has all kinds of things from the sea…

I heard that the original stone marker at Whitehead & South actually was at one time the geographic southern most point… the “new” land mass ( on the Truman Annex ) was either created later by man or nature was not there originally and therefore technically does not count as the southern most point, but since it is in reality the southern most point, the original site added the word “Continental” to distinguish between the two. No doubt this all had something to do with The Truman Annex being military… the new extended land mass was created… but the old traditional site remains of historic fame… or so the theory goes.
