Clarification… yes…. clarification. Being from the Chesapeake Bay Area of Maryland has advantages while you are there… and disadvantages when you are not. I’m talking about food… particularly seafood and especially Crab Cakes. Here in the south, local restaurants are always advertising crab cakes… sometimes even Maryland Style Crab Cakes. Generally nothing could be further from the truth. I guess they really intend to prey on unsuspecting tourists that wouldn’t know a Crab Cake if it… well… fell in their lap. Funny how the whole Crab Cake thing works in the south. Life as it should be … first thing… the number one thing by 95% volume in a Crab Cake should be … duh… crab meat… jumbo lump crab meat. And, by the way, claw meat does not make a crab cake. Neither does imitation crab… aka… cheap minced fish product… red peppers, green peppers, onions, celery, and bread fillers. Here’s an example of a bogus so called crab cake… stuffed and minced into little pieces to no doubt prevent identification of the ingredients origins.
National Restaurant Promotion…
That’s the “Crab Cake” at the bottom…
( the minced bits & pieces )
Now here’s a real Crab Cake…
95% jumbo Lump Crab Meat…
Crab… Crab… Crab…
A funny thing happened at a restaurant in south Florida. The menu said “Maryland Style Crab Cakes”. The first clue is the work “Style”. So we asked the waiter what was in the crab cake. He hesitated for a moment and asked us if we would mind answering a question. No… not at all… what’s the question? He asked where we were from. Upon our reply… the bay area of Maryland… he said he was instructed to advise us that there several other items ( besides the crab cakes ) on the menu that we would enjoy. Five stars for honesty… we got something else and enjoyed our meal. Since than, the never ending search continues for a Real Crab Cake.. here in the south… we are NOT optimistic. Future travels to Texas doesn’t offer much hope either. Guess it will be time to do a mail order… and yes… you can order Real Crab Cakes from Maryland and have them shipped anywhere. You are much better off paying more for the real deal… and having true enjoyment. Unless you enjoy minced particles and pieces of questionable origins and artificial flavorings… maybe you need to visit Maryland or get in a mail order for the real thing. Just remember… it is better to never have experienced the love of real crab cakes… than to have something that is better off made into cat food.
