Isn’t memory a wonderful thing. Just think about it… “IF” it all works to your advantage… your can remember things that you need to, and forget those things you want to. The best of both worlds if it works out that way. ( Just remember… nothings perfect).
What you remember falls into several categories….
- Things you should & need to remember
- Things you wish you could forget
- Things that it’s okay to forget… beneficial later
- Things forgotten that don’t matter
- Things forgotten that cause inconvenience
- Things forgotten that bug you
- Things remembered that amaze you
- Things forgotten that question your sanity
- and maybe you have a few more of your own
GOOD THAT YOU REMEMBER:
Important dates … yep, this will get you in trouble sooner or later… just do your best… Now what’s this string doing on my finger??
Your age… this becomes less apparent the older you get and requires additional moments of thought but you will get it… at least within a year or two… and what does it matter anyway… you’re old…period.
Phone numbers… I don’t need to… they’re stored in my phone that I forgot and left at home… so I don’t loose it.
My passwords to stuff… give yourself a break - same one for important stuff and a nutty one for the rest.
Day, date, and perhaps year… all increasing in cause for concern- Concern level: date=3, day=6, month=8, year=10. and yes, it sad to have those numbers keep piling up. Besides, that’s why I wear a watch that tells me all of this… now only if I hadn’t forgot my glasses so I could actually read my watch. ( there’s always a small catch).
Well… you get the picture… and the list could go on and on…
THINGS YOU WISH TO FORGET:
Everything bad that’s happened… this does get better as you get older and remember less
Everything bad you did… just depends on forgiveness, yourself & others, more forgiven=more forgotten
and again, this list could be lengthily… but forgetting will get easier a you get older.
THINGS THAT ARE OKAY TO FORGET – BENEFICIAL LATER:
My favorite… movies and tv shows… than you can watch them all over again just like the first time.
Ex-Wives… now there’s a biggie. Beneficial F-O-R-E-V-E-R.
Books… again like movies… enjoy them all over again!
THINGS FORGOTTEN THAT DON’T MATTER:
The list is long, but I can’t remember a single example, so I’m 100% here.
THINGS FORGOTTEN = INCONVENIENCE:
Happens all the time… go into other room to get something, forgot what you are doing there, go back to where you started, repeat process until finally get what you wanted ( added benefit – exercise)
Go to store for one thing, come home with several, but not the thing you went for.
Remember the whipped topping after you have already eaten dessert. Guess you’ll just have to find another use for the topping later… ahhh.. you remembered that use… didn’t you.
THINGS FORGOTTEN THAT BUG YOU:
Actors names, movie names, and the like… you know, you know it… I know it… and your mind won’t rest until you think of it… even if you have to look it up on IMDB… ahhh…. relief at last. Even more funny, or if you wish concerning, in a large group, and you all can’t think of it…. the older group you hang with, I guess.
THINGS REMEMBERED THAT AMAZE YOU (and others) you’re gonna take a hit on his one!
The telephone number of your favorite pizza shop from when you were a kid (40 years ago)… and forget to take out the trash or dry & put away the dishes, or close the door, or wipe your feet. Amazement is short lived and if you are a guy… and you’re not going to win this one… so just let it go as quickly as you can… do what you always do that only work in your mind… try to change the subject. ( but… your gonna lose this one too ).
THINGS FORGOTTEN THAT MAKE YOU QUESTION YOUR SANITY
Encompasses all the little stupid things you do, followed by the mental slap yourself on the back of you head… followed by the question… “Why did I do that”? The bigger the blunder the more you question your own sanity. This also applies to those watching you, only they kick up the question of your sanity a couple of notches. You are not going to win this one either!
---------------------
So I’m sure that yall have you own list, your own way of looking at it, and your own blessings or demons about memory to deal with. As for me, I kinda like to just go on my merry way knowing that the chips will fall where they fall, and that most of my efforts to prod my memory will no doubt fail anyway. Besides, I think that sooner or later, as your memory continues to fail, those around you will come to expect less and criticize you less for something that is apparently… “out of your control”! … They will come to accept it! I Hope! Now what’s this string doing on my finger??
Reminders: Aren’t reminders great… like the watch alarm that goes off and you can’t remember what is was for. Of course there’s the modern age of Blackberry’s… they not only give you the alarm, but spell out what is was for, what you should be doing, and when you need to do it… don’t worry about the why… “why” is useless pondering over a universal question that can never logically be answered. But this is sometimes believed to be an evil tool being used by your wife when she sets in the alarm and instructions… but she’s betting that you won’t remember if you did it or not… so she’s in the clear and has everything to gain. Now what’s this string doing on my finger??
