A Trip to the Zoo

What a great day to get out. The weather has warmed up a bit ( just had cold spell) ... around 72 degrees today... so it's the perfect day to visit the Miami Metro Zoo. What a really nice place. The zoo is huge and a bit spread out... which may explain the hundreds of surrey bikes they have to rent. If you don't like or want to walk... the bikes are the answer... and at $22 / 2 hours it's a quick way to get around the park. Rent the bikes for 6 hours and that's only $66. Glad I like to walk... and for now, I have more time & energy than money. What ever preconceived notion I had about the Zoo was all wrong. I thought it would be good... but it was much, much, better than expected. The tickets are $30 for 2 people to get in for the day. After the first day visit, we ungraded to the annual pass for $64/couple. We liked it so much that we knew would revisit there at least 3-4 more times... plus we get discounts in the park... and 20% off other local attractions that we are planning on visiting. The Zoo was not very crowded Friday... some kids from schools... but the place is so huge, it seemed deserted. This is version of the Zoo's Monorail...it does the job... but it sure isn't a Mark VII ! Anyway...just us and the animals. Plenty of helpful, friendly staff everywhere. Since we spend a lot of time in Animal Kingdom, it was only natural to make comparison's. It is so nice to NOT being tossed side to side and all over the place while taking pictures of the animals. The Disney safari ride is great show... but not good for taking pictures. This was a walking tour, self guided, go where you want, stay as long as you like, and get great pictures. Most of the animals are more out in the open to see and get pics, but some must have had Disney training... as soon as you get there... and you go to take a picture... they turn their backside to you. Got to see a wider range of animals compared to Disney. I don't mind seeing snakes behind glass... thick glass. Most are easy to find, some haven't arrived yet... little signs tell you they are coming soon... and some are just empty... with NO SIGN. It's a bit more than scary to see the header sign for the "Bushmaster"... there's no where for him to hide... he's not in the display case... and there's no little sign saying he's moving in soon. SO WHERE IS HE ?? ...and when you look up inside the display case... you see the covered top pushed aside. It's time to go somewhere else...right now!!! Fake Snake... this is a fake coral snake... not poisonous... see, Red touch black... well, it does not matter to me... still not going near it. Did you know that they actually name the animals... so that when the staff are all looking for "Montego"... you think it's just another staff member... and not actually the most aggressive, poisonous snake in the world. Okay... enough about snakes. Shelly got to meet Diego!... can you say Buneous Diaz? [ hey... I have a hard enough time "speelling" in English!] .... more to follow....
