Islamorada .... our next adventure. Everyday off always leads us somewhere new.
Monday we went to the next island... or Key. First there was Key Largo... this was Islamorada. Looks pretty much the same as Key Largo. The highway... US 1.... goes pretty much straight down the middle of the island. Hotels, motels, condos, and businesses basically block any view of the water.... so unless you can stop & get out,
or are staying in that hotel... you can't go down to the water... but you may get the occasional glimpse through the trees and buildings. This all changes at the bridges... and the water is beautiful. We spent the better part of the day at a local attraction.... "Theater by the Sea". It's a quaint little attraction that centers around marine life.
If you go in thinking that "it is what it is" and try not to make comparisons to Seaworld... you will really enjoy all the wildlife, the plants, trees, and flowers, and the little shows that highlight the dolphins, sea lions, fish, turtles, birds, and other assorted local wildlife. Despite the fact that this, at best, is only somewhat of a tourist trap.... (enjoy all the wildlife, trees and plants....
and at the most), but the gift shop is just like every other tourist trap here in the Keys. Of course everything seems to be a tourist trap when you look at the prices vs what you get... so .... tourist trap or economy? More on the brighter side, we got to enjoy the animals, birds, and flowers & trees. The little shows were to say the least... a little hokie... but
we got to enjoy the animals and the info that the staff shared. A good experience, would go on the first time... but wouldn't do it again. Got lots of good pictures and saw a lot of animals close up. Shelly got to kiss a dolphin right on the nose.
Shelly's most vivid memory is that the dolphin ( properly call a porpoise), is the fishy smell.... dolphin breath! Can't imagine why... just ate a whole pot of fish. Speaking of eating... we had a wonderful dinner on the way home. We looked for a local restaurant and decided on the "Mutineer"... right on US 1 in Florida City. We both had Mahi-mahi... aka dolphin. Really good. Now don't get upset... dolphin is not porpoise. We didn't eat "Flipper".... just one of his non-related friends. The restaurant was a bit per tenacious, a bit pricey... but a good experience. We also stopped at a roadside Kite & Flag shoppee... Mostly a little shack surrounded by trees and all the flags, kites, banners, and flags where hanging down everywhere. Had to be 1000 or more! Found something I liked... but not $52 worth! So... and now... Hi-ho... Hi-ho... it's back to work we go!
